Easy homemade healthy keto snacks

Here are some ideas you can cook up  quickly in your kitchen:

1. Egg boats aka Devilled eggs

Scoop out yolks of hard boiled eggs, mash with avocado or yogurt or sour cream and top with some cheese or a sprinkle of your favourite spice for a low carb, high protein snack.

2. Egg muffins

Whisk eggs with seasoning (like salt and pepper, garlic powder or dried herbs), stir in veggies (such as chopped spinach or broccoli or tomatoes) and cheese (like parmesan or cheddar) then bake in muffin tins for 12 to 15 minutes.

3. Dark chocolate bark

Melt dark chocolate (by microwaving and stirring at 30-second intervals or over in a heatproof bowl over simmering water), stir in nuts, seeds or dried fruits of your choice then spread on a lined plate and refrigerate till firm. Choose 70% or higher unsweetened dark chocolate to get the most benefit from it.

Keto-friendly snacks to buy

While the snack aisle may be filled with more carb-laden snacks than keto-friendly ones, here are some options on what you can grab for a healthy keto snack:

  1. 1. Roasted seaweed which is light and crispy, contains many nutrients and without the carb overload.
  2. Keto granola bars which are primarily made from nuts and seeds, with additions of dark chocolate and other low-carb ingredients.

As there are plenty of keto-friendly snack options, it's important to be mindful of what and how much to consume. Many seemingly "healthy" snacks may contain hidden sugars that can quickly add up and put you out of ketosis. Always check the nutrition label for hidden carbs and opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Nuts can be a satisfying snack on keto but they're also calorie-dense and easy to overeat so stick to single servings and avoid those coated with sugar. Even keto-friendly snacks can contribute to weight gain if consumed in excess. Be mindful of portion sizes and listen to your body's hunger cues to avoid overeating.

If snacking or meal planning are a challenge for you, consider HealthFull meals which are calorie-calibrated, help you control your net carbohydrate intake and are curated to keep you full and satisfied between meals.
